8th Pay Commission: Big Pay Hike Ahead for Central Government Employees, 8th CPC May Boost Basic Pay by Over 2.5 Times, know new estimated basic pay

Good News for Central government employees! Central Government Employees in India could soon see a major jump in their basic pay, with the upcoming 8th Pay Commission. The Union Cabinet approved the 8th Pay Commission on January 16, 2025.

It is expected that under the 8th Pay Commission, a big hike will be seen in salaries and pensions for central government employees and retirees.

Although, new 8th CPC revised pay structure will not be implemented starting in 2026 but employees can expect the new pay structure to be released between 2026 and 2027.

Fitment factor in 8th CPC

8th Pay Commission will revise the fitment factor, which is an important metric to calculate basic pay for employees. Fitment factor is a formula used to calculate the revised salary.

In the last 7th Pay Commission, fitment factor was set at 2.57, which increased the basic pay from ₹7,000 to ₹18,000. Now, the 8th Pay Commission is expected to raise this factor to 2.86. If this fitment factor applies, the current basic salary of ₹18,000 could jump to nearly ₹51,480.

Employees across all pay levels will get a pay hike. For example:

  • Level 1 staff (like MTS and Peons) salaries may see a jump from ₹18,000 to ₹51,480.
  • Level 2 clerks could go from ₹19,900 to ₹56,914.
  • Level 3 roles, such as constables or skilled trades, may see their salary go from ₹21,700 to ₹62,062.
  • Level 6, which includes inspectors and junior engineers in government departments, may see a rise in salary from ₹35,400 to ₹1,01,244.
  • Level 10 officers, such as IAS trainees or assistant commissioners, may rise from ₹56,100 to ₹1,60,446.

8th CPC final pay figures and recommendations are still to be approved by the Union Cabinet, but the expectations are high. If the proposed changes are accepted by the Modi Government, it could be a major boost for salaries for the central government employees in the coming years.
