8th Pay Commission: Government Getting Ready, Official Announcement Coming Soon
Central Government is getting closer to releasing the 8th Pay Commission notification, which is expected very soon. The 8th Pay Commission was approved in January 2025, but the government has not yet announced the names of its chairman and members.
Minister of State for Finance Shri Pankaj Chaudhary recently told the Rajya Sabha that the government is working on it and will issue the notification in due time. He also said that after the commission is formed, the chairman and members will be appointed.
The government is currently discussing the matter with various state governments before making the final announcement.
One of the most important parts of the 8th Pay Commission will be the fitment factor. This number is used to calculate the new salary and pension — simply put, new salary = basic salary × fitment factor.
The government may use the Aykroyd formula, which helps decide salaries based on the minimum cost of living, including food, clothing, and housing expenses.
As of now, the Dearness Allowance (DA) is 58%, and it may reach 60% by the time the 8th Pay Commission starts. The base fitment factor is expected to be 1.60, and it could go up by 10–30%. This means it might increase to around 1.8 to 2.08.
Currently, under the 7th Pay Commission, the minimum basic salary for central government employees is ₹18,000, and the minimum pension is ₹9,000, plus DA. Once the 8th Pay Commission is implemented, salaries and pensions will increase based on the new fitment factor.
The final notification is expected soon, and it could bring good news for over 47 lakh employees and 68 lakh pensioners across India who are waiting for a big salary and pension hike.
