UIDAI Clarifies: Aadhaar Not Proof of Citizenship or Date of Birth — Department of Posts Issues Nationwide Circular
New Delhi: Department of Posts has circulated an important clarification from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) regarding the official use and limitations of the Aadhaar number.
The communication, issued under file number F. No. 113-03/2024 by the Financial Services Division, Dak Bhawan, instructs all postal circles and regions to display the notice publicly for awareness.

According to the UIDAI’s clarification (D.O. No. 130651/1/2024-AUTH-I HQ/C-1450012797 dated October 8, 2025), the following key points have been focused:
- Aadhaar can be used solely to establish identity — subject to authentication or offline verification.
- Aadhaar is not proof of citizenship or domicile. It only verifies the identity of the holder and should not be used to determine nationality.
- Aadhaar is not proof of date of birth. Hence, it must not be treated as a conclusive document for establishing one’s date of birth.
Department of Posts has instructed that this clarification be circulated to all concerned offices and displayed on notice boards in public areas of post offices for awareness among staff and citizens.
The circular was issued with the approval of the competent authority and signed by Devender Kumar Sharma, Assistant Director (SB-II).
This move aims to prevent the misuse or misinterpretation of Aadhaar in official documentation and public dealings, ensuring that it is used strictly for its intended purpose — identity verification only.
