GST Registration New Rule: Businesses Can Now Get GST Number Within 3 Days — Big Relief for Small Businesses

New Delhi: To ease compliance for small businesses, the union government has rolled out a new GST registration rule allowing approval within just three working days for eligible applications.

The simplified GST registration scheme, effective from November 1, 2025, is designed to help low-risk and small taxpayers by speeding up the verification and approval process.

Who Can Benefit

Under the new system, businesses that:

  • Have a monthly tax liability of ₹2.5 lakh or less, and
  • Are classified as “low-risk” based on GST system data analytics

can now receive their GST registration within three working days of application.

Even businesses that self-declare their tax liability to be below ₹2.5 lakh per month will be eligible for the scheme.

Approved by the GST Council

The decision was approved by the GST Council — comprising the Union Finance Minister and state finance ministers — during its meeting on September 3, 2025. Businesses can also opt out of the scheme anytime if they choose to.

Finance Minister’s Statement

While inaugurating the new CGST building in Ghaziabad, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the reform will benefit nearly 96% of new GST applicants, most of whom are small traders and service providers.

She instructed the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to set up help desks at GST Seva Kendras to assist applicants and ensure a smooth registration process.

Experts Welcome Move, But Flag Implementation Issues

Tax experts and MSME associations have welcomed the decision, calling it a “timely step” to improve ease of doing business. However, they also cautioned that effective implementation will be the real challenge.

Frequent system glitches, manual verification delays, and inconsistent rules across GST field offices have been longstanding issues.

Experts believe that the government must strengthen backend automation and accountability to make the three-day registration goal truly achievable.

Key Takeaway

The simplified GST registration process is expected to:

  • Reduce waiting times and paperwork,
  • Encourage voluntary registration among small traders,
  • Boost overall compliance and transparency in the GST system.
