India Post GDS Recruitment 2026 Likely to Open 30,000+ Vacancies, 10th Pass Can Apply

India Post is expected to release the Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) Recruitment 2026 notification later this month, with over 30,000 vacancies likely to be announced across the country.

The recruitment drive will cover posts of Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS), Branch Postmaster (BPM) and Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) in rural and semi-urban areas under different postal circles.

The recruitment will be conducted by India Post, one of the world’s largest postal networks operating under the Ministry of Communications. Selected candidates will be posted mainly in village post offices and small-town branches, ensuring postal, banking and insurance services reach remote regions.

As in previous cycles, preference is generally given to candidates applying within their own state or postal circle, subject to eligibility and local language requirements.

As per the expected eligibility norms, candidates must have passed Class 10 from a recognised board, with Mathematics and English as subjects, and should have studied the local language up to Class 10 level. Basic computer knowledge and the ability to ride a bicycle are also required, unless exempted by competent authority.

The minimum age is 18 years, while the upper age limit is 40 years, with relaxation applicable for reserved categories.

One of the key attractions of GDS recruitment is that no written examination is conducted. Selection is purely merit-based, prepared on the basis of Class 10 marks calculated up to four decimal places. For candidates whose boards award grades instead of marks, grades are converted using a prescribed formula.

Shortlisted candidates are called for document verification, and merit lists are released in multiple rounds depending on vacancies.

The application process is expected to begin soon after the notification is issued and will be conducted online through the official GDS portal. Candidates can apply for multiple posts, but only within one selected postal division.

An application fee of ₹100 is applicable for General, OBC and EWS candidates, while SC, ST, PwD, female and transgender candidates are exempted.

The anticipated vacancy count is based on previous recruitment data, where over 21,000 posts were notified across various circles. States like Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka traditionally account for a large share of GDS vacancies. The detailed circle-wise and category-wise breakup will be released along with the official notification.

GDS recruits are paid under the Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA) system. The starting monthly pay ranges from ₹10,000 to ₹24,470 for ABPM/Dak Sevak posts, while BPMs earn between ₹12,000 and ₹29,380, depending on workload and responsibility.

The role involves mail delivery, customer service, handling small savings schemes and supporting branch operations, making GDS staff the backbone of postal services in rural India.

Candidates are advised to regularly monitor the official India Post GDS website for updates, ensure their documents are ready, and verify eligibility carefully once the notification is released, as the competition is expected to be intense given the large number of applicants nationwide.
