Traffic Challan Rules! Don’t violate this Traffic Rule, otherwise fine will be imposed on your vehicle, you have to pay e-challan online
If you’re a two-wheeler rider, then be aware of this traffic rule. Violating a traffic signal can impose fine against your vehicle. A fine will be issued in the name of the bike owner for breaking traffic signal rules under Section 119/177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
People generally disobey traffic signals. However, most of the traffic signals have cameras that captures photo when somebody violates traffic rules. The most common Traffic cameras are red light cameras, speed cameras, and ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras. if you violate rules this will cause you a traffic challan with fine.
What are red light traffic cameras?
A red light running traffic camera is a special type a camera that captures images of a vehicle that enters a traffic intersection when the traffic light is showing red. Red light cameras remain active when the traffic signal is red and automatically take photos of the vehicle which are violating the signal.

Challan & Punishment for Signal Violations
If a traffic police officer stops you for a signal violation, please stop and cooperate with him. In most cases, if your violation was not intended and was a mistake for some reason, they may warn you and allow you to go without any fine. However, if traffic cameras catch you while violating a signal, it will issue an e-challan against your vehicle almost the same time. For some cases issuing e-challans may take upto 1-2 hours if it’s a very busy road.
If you violate a traffic signal for the first time, a fine of Rs. 500 will be issued against your vehicle number under the 119/177MVA Signal Violation # ( 119/177MVA ), under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.
A fine of Rs. 1500 will be issued for the 2nd and subsequent offence against the vehicle number. Repeated offenders may face imprisonment upto 3-6 months.
How to Check and Pay Your eChallan:
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India (MoRTH) has made the challan system digital, so now traffic rule violators can check the challan status and pay fines online on the e-challan portal.
- Visit the official website: echallan.parivahan.gov.in
- Enter your vehicle number or driving license number
- View the challan details.
- Proceed to pay online.
Once paid, your challan will be disposed. That means the case has been resolved and the matter is closed. From now on, stay alert, follow traffic rules, and drive safely to avoid fines in future.
