Aviation News: PM Modi to Inaugurate Navi Mumbai International Airport on October 8; Flights to Begin in December
New Delhi: Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on October 8. The airport is expected to begin its flight operations by December this year.
According to CIDCO Vice Chairman and Managing Director Vijay Singhal, the airport received its aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on September 30.
Developed in multiple phases, the project is a joint venture between the Adani Group, which holds a 74% stake through Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), and the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO), which retains 26%.
Spread across 1,160 hectares, the Navi Mumbai airport will serve as the second major aviation hub for Mumbai and is designed to be twice the size of the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

The first phase, built at a cost of ₹19,646 crore, includes a terminal capable of handling 20 million passengers annually. Once fully developed, the airport will accommodate up to 90 million passengers a year and handle 3.5 million tonnes of cargo.
The airport has multiple advanced features, including an Automated People Mover (APM) system that links all terminals via underground tunnels, allowing passengers to check in from any terminal with their baggage automatically transferred to the correct location. The runway has been designed to handle all categories of aircraft, ensuring operational flexibility for global airlines.
The airport will be linked through multiple transport modes—road, rail, and waterways. Water taxi services will operate from nearby Targhar, while the Atal Setu will provide direct road connectivity.
Additionally, a proposed “Gold Line” metro will connect the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai to the new Navi Mumbai facility.
Navi Mumbai International Airport inauguration is expected to handle air traffic congestion at Mumbai’s existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Mumbai airport.
