Under regulation 27 of the Aadhaar (Enrolment & Update) Regulations, 2016, UIDAI has the power to deactivate or cancel Aadhaar numbers found to be duplicate, fraudulent, or issued based on incorrect data.

Under Regulation 27, UIDAI can cancel an Aadhaar if:

  • The enrolment or update is found to be invalid or improper,
  • The Aadhaar is issued through false information, or
  • The number is linked to multiple identities or duplicates, or
  • UIDAI receives a court order or government direction to cancel it.

Citizens who get such cancellations messages are advised to verify their Aadhaar status on the official UIDAI portal — https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/verifyAadhaar — and contact UIDAI through its helpline 1947 or by visiting the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra for clarification.

Experts note that while such cases are rare, they highlight the importance of ensuring accurate demographic and biometric information during Aadhaar enrolment and updates.
