Big Update for CBSE Students: CBSE Makes 75% Attendance Mandatory for Board Exam Eligibility, see details
New Delhi: Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed all schools under CBSE affiliation to strictly follow the attendance requirements laid down in its Examination Bye-Laws for students appearing in CBSE Class X and XII Board examinations.
As per Rules 13 and 14 of the CBSE Examination Bye-Laws, students must have at least 75% attendance to be eligible to appear for the board exams.
A relaxation of up to 25% is allowed only in exceptional cases such as medical emergencies, participation in national or international sports events, or other serious reasons, provided the absence is supported by a proper reason.
CBSE Affiliated Schools have been instructed to:
- Inform students and parents about the mandatory attendance rule.
- Maintain attendance registers, signed daily by the class teacher and the school authority.
- Insist on written leave applications for all absences.
- Communicate regularly with parents if a student’s attendance falls short.
- Keep records ready for CBSE inspections, as surprise checks may be conducted.
CBSE has made it clear that if cases of short attendance are submitted, no changes will be allowed thereafter. Schools must forward genuine shortage attendance cases with complete supporting documents to the concerned CBSE Regional Office within the prescribed deadlines — the last date for approvals being 7th February of the examination year.
CBSE has also warned that students without the required attendance percentage and proper leave records may be treated as dummy candidates and barred from appearing in the exams. Along with this, schools with incomplete records may face strict action, including possible disaffiliation with CBSE.
CBSE issues these guidelines to promote regular attendance, academic discipline, and compliance with CBSE examination rules.
