Census 2027: Central Government Issues Notification for Census in 2027, To Start 6 Months Earlier in 4 States, check details
Government has officially issued a Gazette notification to begin the 16th Census of India. The Ministry of Home Affairs released the notification on June 16, 2025, following a high-level review meeting held a day earlier, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah along with Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Registrar General, Census Commissioner, and other senior government officials.

Census to be conducted in two phases
The entire census process for the country is expected to be completed by 2027. However, in selected snowy regions such as Ladakh, Union Territory areas of Jammu-Kashmir, and States of Himachal Pradesh & Uttarakhand, the census enumeration work will begin earlier and is expected to be completed by October 1, 2026.
For the other states in India, the census is planned to be completed by March 1, 2027. The government has announced that approximately 1.3 lakh officers will be involved in the census process.
Caste census will be included this time
This time census will be conducted in two phases and will include a caste census for the first time. The first phase will be House Listing Operation (HLO). Under this phase, census workers will collect information about households, properties, and available properties.
After this, the second phase is Population Estimation (PE). This census phase will involve counting individuals and gathering socio-economic, cultural, and demographic data, including caste-based information.

16th Census of India
The 2025 Census is India’s 8th census after independence and the 16th census of India. This time central government will include caste data, which is expected to provide detailed socio-economic insights for policy change and welfare programs.
