Defence Minister approves 100% increase in Financial Assistance for Ex-Servicemen and their Families

NEW DELHI: Defense Minister Shri Rajnath Singh has approved a 100% increase in financial assistance for Ex-Servicemen (ESM) and their dependents.

The increased financial benefits will be provided under various schemes run by the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare through the Kendriya Sainik Board, the Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday.

Under the revised structure, the Penury Grant has been doubled from ₹4,000 to ₹8,000 per month per beneficiary, offering lifetime support to aged and non-pensioner ex-servicemen and widows aged 65 years or above with no regular income.

Similarly, the Education Grant has been increased from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 per month per child, applicable for up to two dependent children (from Class I to Graduation), or for widows pursuing a two-year postgraduate course.

The Marriage Grant has also seen a significant hike, rising from ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 per beneficiary. This benefit applies to the marriage of up to two daughters of ESM and also to widow remarriage, provided the marriage takes place after the new order’s implementation.

The revised rates will be effective for applications submitted from November 1, 2025, onwards. The new change is expected to involve an annual financial outlay of about ₹257 crore, funded through the Raksha Mantri Ex-Servicemen Welfare Fund, which forms part of the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF).

By doubling these financial aids, the government seeks to honour the service, sacrifice, and dignity of India’s ex-servicemen and their families.
