NEW DELHI: Department of Posts has initiated a new review process to rationalise Branch Post Offices (BOs) across the country.
In an official communication dated 13 November 2025, the Ministry of Communications has directed all Circles to examine the existing BO network, especially Urban Branch Offices, and identify those suitable for relocation, merger, or redeployment.

According to the approved postal network as on 31 March 2025, India has 1,39,908 Branch Post Offices, including 2,708 Urban BOs. The latest circular notes that many Urban BOs have become “dysfunctional” or “non-relevant” due to network expansion in nearby areas or other operational changes.
With overlapping service points in several locations, the department believes there is clear scope for restructuring to meet the needs of local populations better.
Circles have been asked to submit details of BOs that can be rationalised by 21 November 2025 in the prescribed format.
They must also indicate their requirement for BOs, if any, so that redeployment across Circles can be planned without affecting the overall postal network. The directive focuses that the objective is to improve efficiency while maintaining service access for citizens.
The communication, issued with the approval of the competent authority, has been signed by Dhammjyoti R. Gajbhiye, Director (Establishment & Planning).
The decision signals the government’s continued effort to modernise the postal infrastructure, reduce redundancy, and ensure optimal utilisation of manpower and resources.
