India Railways Aims To Eliminate All Level Crossing Gates By 2030 Under Modernisation Drive

NEW DELHI: Ministry of Railways, Government of India, aims to eliminate all railway gates by 2030, replacing them with underbridges and overbridges to enhance safety and operational efficiency across the country’s largest rail network.

The initiative is part of the government’s plan to modernize India’s transport infrastructure, particularly with the introduction of new-generation trains, such as the Vande Bharat, and the development of upcoming high-speed corridors.

Union Minister of State for Fisheries and Minority Affairs George Kurian shared the information while flagging off the Thiruvananthapuram–Kannur Jan Shatabdi Express at Changanassery, Kerala. He stated that the new infrastructure would ensure zero manual crossings and smoother train operations.

Kurian added that 35 railway stations in Kerala have been shortlisted under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with a total investment of ₹2,500 crore for their redevelopment and modernization of those stations. All stations nationwide will gradually be upgraded to meet Amrit Bharat standards, he added.

Highlighting the importance of infrastructure development, the minister noted that roads and railways are the twin pillars of national development, and linking Changanassery station with the upcoming Sabari and Punalur railway lines would open up new business opportunities in the region.
