Indian Railways Announces New Rule: Change Your Travel Date Without Cancelling Confirmed Ticket

New Delhi: Indian Railways has announced a new rule that will allow travelers to change the date of their journey on a confirmed ticket without cancelling it. The new facility will be implemented from January next year, aiming to make train travel more flexible and hassle-free for millions of passengers.

The Hon’ble Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said the new feature has been designed to address one of the most common issues faced by passengers—last-minute plan changes that force them to cancel confirmed tickets and incur cancellation charges.

Under the new system, passengers holding a confirmed ticket can reschedule their travel date online through the official Indian Railways website or mobile app, without any additional fee. However, the change will be subject to seat availability on the newly selected date. If no confirmed seats are available, the passenger will be placed on a waiting list and confirmed later if a seat becomes vacant.

Officials said the move will help reduce cancellation rates while improving convenience and satisfaction among travelers.

Key Benefits for Passengers:

  • No Cancellation Charges: Passengers will no longer need to pay cancellation charges if they change their travel date.
  • Time-Saving: No need to stand in queues or rebook tickets manually.
  • Fully Online Process: The entire procedure—from applying to confirmation—can be completed digitally.

With this new rule, train travel in India is set to become smoother, more flexible, and more convenient.
