Indian Railways: Railways modernizing passenger experience through technology, New Passenger Reservation System to launch by end 2025
Indian Railways is modernizing the passenger experience with its upcoming New Passenger Reservation System (PRS) by December 2025. This will increase the current ticket booking capacity and increase convenience for passengers.
The New Passenger Reservation System (PRS) is being developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS). According to PIN Press Release by the Ministry of Railways, this PRS system can handle over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, about five times the current capacity of 32000 tickets in a minute.

The upcoming PRS will have a multilingual interface. Passengers will be able to submit their choice of seat, view the fare calendar, and access integrated facilities for Divyangjan, students, and patients.
Improved advanced charting to have certainties of travel plan
To reduce uncertainty for waitlist ticket passengers, Indian Railways will soon implement advanced charting of reservation lists. For trains departing before 2 PM, charts be prepared by 9 pm on the previous day. This change will give passengers more clarity and time to make alternative travel plans if needed.
Tatkal Booking Process Change
Tatkal booking process is also getting a major change. Starting July 1, 2025, only Aadhaar-authenticated users will be able to book Tatkal tickets via IRCTC’s website and mobile app.
By the end of July, OTP-based authentication will become mandatory to book Tatkal train tickets. Users will be required to verify their identity using Aadhaar eKYC or other government-issued IDs linked through DigiLocker to ensure passenger transparency and fraud prevention in ticket bookings.
These upcoming changes reflect the continuous efforts of Indian Railways to modernise its systems and make them more citizen-friendly for passengers.
