Odisha Seeks Support for Bhubaneswar Science City Project, Central Government Assures Consideration

Odisha state government has proposed the development of a state-of-the-art Science City in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Odisha’s Minister for Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare and Science & Technology, Sri Krishna Chandra Patra, met with Union Minister of State for Science & Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, in New Delhi on July 3, 2025, to present the proposal and seek central assistance in establishing the science city.

Government of Odisha has allotted 100 acres of land for the proposed Science City project. Odisha government wants it to be a hub of scientific curiosity, interactive learning, and research, especially for the youth. “We believe central support will be instrumental in realizing this vision,” said Patra in a formal letter handed over during the meeting.

Union Minister of State for Science & Technology Shri Dr. Jitendra Singh responded positively to the proposal, assuring that the central government would give the proposal due consideration. He also suggested strengthening Odisha’s existing scientific infrastructure, including CSIR labs and space research centres, to complement future developments.

Along with the Science City proposal, Sri Krushna Chandra Patra submitted multiple science and technology-related proposals: an Astronomy Observatory, a Bay of Bengal Coastal Observatory under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, an Intellectual Property and Patent Facilitation Centre, and projects under the Department of Biotechnology.

The Odisha government also sought support for projects under the Ministry of Culture and the National Council for Science Museums.

Dr. Singh encouraged Odisha to establish a Bio E-Cell under the Centre’s Bio-E3 policy and utilize its coastal and mineral strengths through national missions like the Deep Ocean Mission.
