PM Modi Marks 10 Years of Digital India, Showcases Nation’s Growth in Digital Transformation Journey

Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today shared a special article on celebrating the successful completion of 10 years of the Digital India initiative. He highlighted how Digital India has helped to reshape the nation’s development journey and empowered over 140 crore citizens across every aspect of life.

Digital India Initiative: Since 2015

Launched in 2015, the Digital India Initiative was launched to provide government services to citizens digitally. Back then, India had just 25 crore internet connections. Today, that number has risen to over 97 crores, supported by 42 lakh km of high-speed optical fibre internet connection reaching even the remotest regions of India.

India’s 5G Connectivity

India’s rapid 5G rollout has reached about 4.81 lakh base stations in two years. Now 5G network provides high-speed connectivity to both urban India and remote areas like Galwan and Siachen. Platforms built on India’s indigenous technology i.e UPI which handles over 100 billion transactions annually, have made digital payments easy for the common public.

Over ₹44 lakh crore has been transferred via DBT (Direct Beneficiary Transfer). The government has saved about ₹3.48 lakh crore by eliminating middlemen after DBT was launched.

Opportunity for All

Platforms like ONDC and GeM (Government e Marketplace) have opened new opportunities for small startups, MSMEs, and women entrepreneurs. ONDC recently crossed 200 million transactions, with the last 100 million in just six months.

From Banarasi weavers to bamboo artisans in Nagaland, sellers are now reaching customers nationwide, without middlemen or digital monopolies. GeM has also crossed ₹1 lakh crore GMV in 50 days, with 22 lakh sellers including 1.8 lakh+ women-led MSMEs, who have fulfilled orders worth ₹46,000 crore.

Digital Public Infrastructure: India’s Global Offering

Services like DigiLocker and CoWIN have made digital access seamless for millions of Indians. India’s leadership in technology in Digital Public Infrastructure is now being adopted globally.

With over 1.8 lakh startups and world-leading AI talent, India is now one of the top three startup ecosystems in the World. Through the India AI Mission and Global DPI (Digital Public Infrastructure) efforts, India is moving from digital governance to becoming a digital leader on the global stage.

Under the G20 Presidency, India launched the Global DPI Repository and a $25 million Social Impact Fund, helping nations across Africa and South Asia adopt inclusive digital ecosystems.

In the article, PM Modi called Digital India a people’s movement and a pillar of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. He concluded with a message to the youth: “Let us build what empowers. Let us solve what truly matters. Let us lead with technology that unites, includes, and uplifts.
