Toll tax exemption: Toll tax rate cut on these highways, now toll tax will be only Rs 153 instead of Rs 317, know who will get exemption benefits
Central government has approved a reduction in toll tax on cars travelling on highways made of flyovers and tunnels will become cheaper than before. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India (MoRTH) has finalized the new policy and is expected to issue the notification shortly.
Only Rs 153 will be charged as Toll Tax instead of Rs 317
Under the new rules by MoRTH & NHAI, toll tax charges on roads where more than 50% of which are made up of structures (such as flyovers, underpasses, tunnels). Till now, these highways have charged up to 10 times the normal toll rate due to high construction costs.
But from now on, the toll tax will be capped at just 5 times the standard rate, which will make highway journeys considerably more affordable.

For example, Delhi’s Dwarka Expressway is a 28.5 km long highway with 21 km built on structures. Currently, a one-way car trip on this expressway costs ₹317, in which Rs 306 is charged for the structured part and Rs 11 for the normal part. After the new rules revision, the toll will be cut to ₹153, which will directly save 50% on toll tax.
This decision is especially beneficial for daily travelers who use the urban ring road, bypass and highways daily, where structured roads are common. However, it won’t be beneficial for those who already hold an annual toll pass for private vehicles.
After this change, the new highway projects being built in urban areas in the coming time will not have a huge impact on the pockets of car owners and will help in making the traffic smoother.
