Big news for daily train passengers! If you regularly travel by train, then here is some important news you need to know. Indian Railways may increase passenger train fares starting from July 1, 2025.

According to multiple news reports, Indian Railways is going to increase passenger train fares for the first time after many years. This fare increase will mainly affect long-distance and express trains, with both AC and non-AC classes.

Train Ticket price hike of non-AC mail / Express trains

According to The Economic Times, ticket fares for non-AC mail and express trains will increase by 1 paisa per kilometre. AC class fares will increase by 2 paisa per kilometre journey. Passengers traveling within 500 kilometres in second-class coaches will not face any change in ticket prices.

For journeys beyond 500 km in second class coaches, the ticket fare will increase by just 0.5 paisa per kilometre. Suburban train fares and Monthly Season Tickets (MSTs) fares will remain unchanged.

Ticket fares are expected to be increased for all the premium AC trains like Rajdhani, Tejas, Vande Bharat and Namo Bharat metro rails.

The revised train ticket fares that will come into effect from July 1 are as follows-

  • There will be no increase in suburban fares.
  • Monthly season ticket (MST) prices will remain same.
  • Fares will not be increased for distances up to 500 km in second class train journey.
  • For distances above 500 km in second class, the fare will increase by half a paisa per kilometer.
  • Ticket fares for mail and express (non-AC) trains will increase by 1 paisa per kilometer.
  • Ticket fares for AC class will increase by 2 paisa per kilometer journey.

Tatkal Booking Rules have been Changed

Indian Railways has also changed the rules for Tatkal ticket booking. Starting July 1, Aadhaar-based OTP verification will be mandatory for booking any new Tatkal tickets. This new rule will apply to online bookings, reservation counters, and bookings via agents. Indian Railways aims to prevent misuse and ensure genuine passengers benefit from the Tatkal ticket system with this new change.
