TikTok is Not Returning to India, Confirms IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

New Delhi: Rumours of TikTok’s return to India are dismissed after Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that no proposal has been received for the app’s re-entry into the Indian social media market.

The speculation started earlier this month when several users reported temporary access to the TikTok app — which has been banned in India since June 2020 — and when new job listings at ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, appeared in Gurgaon.

However, IT Minister Vaishnaw dismissed the rumours in an interview with Moneycontrol, stating, “There is absolutely no proposal which has come from any quarters.”

When asked whether Chinese investors could re-enter India’s technology sector, the Minister said, “We will see as it happens,” suggesting that future discussions may depend on broader policy developments.

While TikTok remains banned in India, the platform continues to play a major role in global music promotion, with many Indian record labels and artists still using it for the promotion of their songs.
