SC to hear suo motu case on ‘Digital Arrest’ scam victims on October 27
New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India will hear a suo motu case on October 27 concerning victims of so-called “digital arrests” — a growing cybercrime trend in which fraudsters use forged judicial documents to extort or deceive people, often posing as police or government officials.
As per the Supreme Court’s cause list, the matter titled “In Re: Victims of Digital Arrest Related to Forged Documents” will be taken up by a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi.

During the previous hearing on October 17, the apex court noted that there was a need for coordinated nationwide action to tackle this growing menace.
Supreme Court observed that the scam involved an organized criminal network using fake judicial and police documents to threaten individuals—particularly senior citizens—into transferring money under the pretext of legal action.
The bench had remarked that stern, pan-India action was necessary, calling for cooperation between central and state police agencies to identify and dismantle the network behind these digital frauds.
The case reflects the Supreme Court’s growing concern over cyber extortion and digital impersonation crimes, which have surged across India with increasing access to online communication and official-looking forged materials. The October 27 hearing is expected to lay the groundwork for wider directives aimed at protecting citizens from such scams.
