Government Launches Bharat Taxi, a Driver-Owned Ride-Hailing Initiative; Home Minister Amit Shah Shah expressed confidence that it will soon become India’s No.1 taxi operating app

Government has launched Bharat Taxi, a cooperative-based ride-hailing platform, aimed at offering a fair, transparent and driver-owned alternative in India’s mobility sector. The service became operational for customers from the first of this month.

The initiative has been conceptualised under the guidance of the Union Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation, Amit Shah, with a focus on placing drivers at the centre of the platform’s ownership and decision-making structure. Home Minister Amit Shah expressed confidence that it will soon become India’s No.1 taxi operating app.

Unlike conventional ride-hailing models, Bharat Taxi is designed to ensure that drivers are not just service providers but also stakeholders who participate in governance and profit-sharing.

According to the government, the platform seeks to address long-standing concerns in the ride-hailing ecosystem related to commission structures, income stability and lack of ownership for drivers.

By adopting a cooperative model, Bharat Taxi aims to provide greater transparency, fair earnings and long-term economic security to drivers, while also offering reliable and affordable services to passengers.

The launch of Bharat Taxi aligns with the broader vision of strengthening cooperative enterprises and promoting inclusive growth in the digital economy.

The government has said the initiative reflects its commitment to empowering workers, encouraging self-reliance and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities through technology-driven solutions.
