GDS Online Transfer Cycle May 2026: Department of Posts Releases Full Schedule and New FAQs

New Delhi, May 21, 2026: Department of Posts has officially announced the GDS Rule-3 Online Transfer Cycle for May 2026, opening the Limited Transfer Facility (LTF) portal for Gramin Dak Sevaks seeking transfer to other posts/divisions.

Along with the schedule, the department has also issued an updated set of FAQs clarifying eligibility, cancellation, joining, transfer chances, and other operational matters.

As per the order issued by the GDS Section, the transfer process will begin with vacancy updation from 25 May 2026.

Full Schedule for GDS Transfer Cycle May 2026

The activity-wise timeline is as follows:

  • Vacancy updation by Divisions/Units: 25 May 2026 to 1 June 2026
  • Vacancy approval by Circles: 2 June 2026 to 4 June 2026
  • Online registration & application submission by GDS: 8 June 2026 to 17 June 2026
  • One-time modification in submitted applications: 18 June 2026 to 19 June 2026
  • Verification of applications by Divisions: 20 June 2026 to 25 June 2026
  • Approved transfer list publication: 6 July 2026
  • Cancellation request window: 7 July 2026 to 12 July 2026
  • Final relieving orders: From 13 July 2026 onwards
  • Final date of relieving: 21 July 2026

Which Vacancies Will Be Considered?

The Department clarified that vacancies arising up to 31 May 2026 due to:

  • resignation
  • voluntary discharge
  • departmental appointment
  • deputation to IPPB/APS (more than 6 months)
  • unfilled death vacancies (if next kin not appointed within six months)

will be included for transfer.

However, vacancies already reserved for GDS online engagement, court cases, or surplus posts identified in establishment review will not be considered.

Important Eligibility Conditions

The FAQs issued with the circular provide important clarity:

Minimum Service Required

A GDS can apply only after completing:

  • 1 year continuous engagement for:
    • Mutual transfer
    • PwBD category transfer
  • 2 years continuous engagement for all other transfer cases

Transfer Chances

Maximum transfer opportunities:

  • Male GDS: 2 chances
  • Female GDS: 3 chances

A cooling-off period of 1 year is mandatory between two transfers.

Who Cannot Apply?

A GDS will not be eligible if:

  • put-off duty is in force
  • police/court case is pending or contemplated
  • post-engagement verification is incomplete

This includes pending:

  • caste verification
  • EWS/PwBD verification
  • educational verification
  • police verification

New Rule for Cancellation Requests

A major change this cycle is OTP-based cancellation authentication.

If a GDS submits a cancellation request during the 5-day cancellation window, it will be treated as final, and reversal will not be allowed.

If cancellation is requested after the portal window but before deemed relieving, written request may be considered by the Divisional Head.

Joining and Relieving Rules

The Department has made it clear:

  • no extension beyond final relieving date (except maternity/hospitalization/accident cases)
  • once relieved, cancellation or repatriation is not allowed
  • joining will not be possible unless relieving documents are uploaded

BPM Transfer Special Rule

If an ABPM/Dak Sevak is transferred as BPM:

  • BPM training may be required
  • accommodation for Branch Office must be arranged where needed
  • all formalities must be completed within 15 days of joining

The May 2026 transfer cycle is important for GDS employees seeking transfer under the Limited Transfer Facility. Since timelines are strict and cancellation rules are now tighter, applicants should carefully verify their eligibility and preferences before applying.
