Made wrong UPI Payment? 5 easy steps to get your money back into your bank account for wrong UPI payments

India’s most favourite way to pay is UPI. UPI stands for Unified Payment Interface, an online real-time payment system by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) to make online payments easy. By value, the transactions via UPI totalled Rs 25.14 lakh crore in May 2025, reported by NPCI.

Sometimes, in a hurry users made wrong UPI payments. Later, when they realize about wrong UPI payment then they become frustrated to get the money back.

How to reverse wrong UPI money transfers?

Accidentally transferred money to the wrong UPI address?

Then don’t panic.

If you’ve made a wrong UPI payment to an incorrect UPI ID or have chosen the wrong contact, then take immediate steps. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) have clear guidelines and a resolution redressal mechanism to help you recover your money in such cases.

Take a screenshot of the Transaction

Take a screenshot to keep a record of the transaction ID, date and time, recipient’s UPI ID, and the amount transferred. This information will be needed by authorities to initiate the reversal request for the transaction.

Immediately Contact Your Bank or UPI App Support

As soon as you notice the wrong UPI payments, contact your bank or the UPI app’s customer care (e.g., Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, BHIM). Most apps have a “Help” or “Report a Problem” section that allows you to raise a dispute for wrong payments.

Raise a Complaint at NPCI Portal

If your issue isn’t resolved after contacting UPI app support or bank’s customer care then you can lodge a complaint on the official NPCI website through the UPI dispute redressal system: https://www.npci.org.in/what-we-do/upi/dispute-redressal-mechanism

File a Complaint with the Banking Ombudsman

If you don’t receive a satisfactory response from concerned authorities within 30 days, you can escalate the matter to the RBI’s Banking Ombudsman: https://cms.rbi.org.in

Filing an FIR (If it’s a fraud)

In cases of fraudulent transactions or if the recipient refuses to return the amount, you may lodge a First Information Report (FIR) with the local police. Cybercrime victims should contact to police authorities urgently.

Important Note on UPI Reversal

Money sent to the wrong UPI ID cannot be reversed without the recipient’s consent unless the bank or the RBI directs it. However, if the wrong UPI ID doesn’t exist or is inactive, the transaction may automatically fail or get refunded to you within 24-48 hours.

Always double-check the recipient’s name and UPI ID before doing any UPI payment. Attention is the first step to prevention.
