EPFO Big Update! EPFO Makes Face Authentication via UMANG App Mandatory for UAN Generation from 1st August 2025

New Delhi: Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced that, starting from 1st August 2025, the allotment and activation of Universal Account Numbers (UAN) will be done only through the Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) available in the UMANG mobile app.

Kind reference is invited to Circular No. WSU/MemberProfile/E710137/2025-26/17 dated 08/Apr/2025 vide which a simple and robust process for allotment/generation and activation of UAN was introduced in the UMANG APP leveraging aadhaar based Face Authentication Technology (FAT).

This new change is made to ensure error-free UAN generation by directly validating Aadhaar details and completing the activation process instantly. EPFO Members will just need the UMANG App, Aadhaar Face RD App, a valid Aadhaar number, and the Aadhaar-linked mobile number for OTP verification.

Once UAN is generated using Face Authentication Technology (FAT), members can start using EPFO services such as view passbook, KYC updates, and claim submissions without any extra steps. This order is issued with the approval of CPFC.

The current employer-based UAN generation process will remain only for exceptional cases, such as international workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan.
